About Indonesian cassia & our cooperative

Where does Indonesian cinnamon come from?
Approximately 50% of the world's cinnamon originates from Indonesia, and most of it grows in the Kerinci Highlands of Sumatra — a volcanic region in Jambi Province at altitudes around 1,500–2,000 m. This area produces the Korintje variety of cassia cinnamon, prized for its rich aroma and high oil content.
What is Korintje cinnamon?
Korintje cinnamon is a variety of cassia (Cinnamomum burmannii) grown specifically in the Kerinci Highlands of Sumatra, Indonesia. It is known for its rich aroma, sweet flavor and high essential-oil content, and accounts for the vast majority of cinnamon used in North America.
What is the difference between cassia and Ceylon cinnamon?
Cassia (Cinnamomum burmannii or Cinnamomum cassia) has a stronger, sweeter flavor and a thicker bark. Ceylon cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum) has a more delicate, citrusy taste and a thin, layered bark. Around 90% of the cinnamon sold worldwide is cassia. Cassia Co-op specializes in Korintje cassia from Sumatra.
Is Cassia Co-op cinnamon sustainable and certified?
Yes. Cassia Co-op operates under FSSC 22000 food safety certification, Rainforest Alliance, USDA Organic, EU Organic and UEBT (Union for Ethical BioTrade) standards. The cooperative works directly with over 1,000 partner farmers in Kerinci, runs a seedling nursery programme, and ensures full traceability from origin to end user.
Does Cassia Co-op supply bulk cassia worldwide?
Yes. Cassia Co-op ships bulk cassia worldwide from Indonesia, with local service support from offices in The Netherlands and the United States. Products available include cassia powder, cut & sifted, tea bag cut and sticks.
Why is Cassia Co-op based directly in Kerinci?
Cassia Co-op is the first and only processor-exporter of cassia to establish operations directly in Kerinci, Sumatra. This proximity to origin guarantees freshness, an unbroken chain of custody, full traceability, and direct contact with the partner farmers who grow the cinnamon.
Do you supply cinnamon (kaneel) to the Dutch and European market?
Yes. Cassia Co-op runs a dedicated office in The Netherlands to serve Dutch, Belgian and broader European customers. Our cassia — known locally as "kaneel" — is shipped in bulk directly from Kerinci, Sumatra and meets EU Organic, FSSC 22000, Rainforest Alliance and UEBT requirements. Wij spreken Nederlands.
What product forms of cassia (cinnamon) do you offer?
We supply six bulk forms of single-origin Korintje cassia (Cinnamomum burmannii): Cassia powder, Cut & Sifted cassia, Tea Bag Cut, Premium Cassia Sticks, Custom Cassia Sticks, and Broken & Clean cassia. All grades are produced at our FSSC 22000 facility in Kerinci, Sumatra, and shipped worldwide from Indonesia.
